"Back at the turn of the twentieth century, a boy named George Mottershead was taken to a zoo in Manchester. What George saw that day inspired him to do something different.

Determinedly he told his father: ‘When I have a zoo, it won’t have any bars.'

George never forgot that day, or the vow he made. In 1930, now grown up and with a family, he bought Oakfield House and seven acres of land for £3,500. And with him, he brought a group of animals from a zoo at Shavington, near Crewe... the first animals of Chester Zoo."

Chester Zoo care for over 20,000 animals across 125 acres of award-winning zoological gardens. Conservation is at the heart of the zoo and so around half of these are threatened. The Zoo is continually developing the highest standards of conservation and care of its animals and plants, making a real contribution to saving them from extinction.

Chester Zoo covers an area of over 100 acres within a total land holding of over 400 acres. The Zoo was founded in the early 1930s by George Mottershead, this followed an earlier venture in partnership with Dr. English of developing a small zoo at Shavington, Cheshire, where the Mottershead family market garden business was based.

The Zoo is internationally known for its innovative enclosure designs, which in the early years were achieved in an austere economic climate, for its many breeding successes and its involvement in co-operative breeding programmes.

The Zoo is completely wheelchair and pushchair accessible, and all of our toilet facilities have disabled access, as well as plenty of Parent and Baby changing rooms. And parents will be delighted to know that our new Fun Ark adventure play area, near the Ark Restaurant, is a great place for children of all ages to let off steam!

There is a wide range of shops, cafes and ice-cream kiosks located around the Zoo; which cater for all tastes and budgets. At our Fountain Shop a fun and professional face-painting service is available during peak periods.
